By Illinois State Statute the City Clerk is appointed by the Mayor and the term of office runs concurrently with the Mayor’s term.
The City Clerk is the official keeper of the City’s records and the custodian of the City Seal. The City Clerk prepares City Council meeting agendas, ensuring public notice is given pursuant to the Open Meetings Act and attends all meetings of the City Council keeping a full record of their proceedings. The City Clerk serves as the Freedom of Information Officer and is responsible for administration of the Freedom of Information Act. The City Clerk serves as the Local Election Authority, making available and receiving petitions for candidacy to election for City Council. The City Clerk ensures appropriate documents are recorded and filed with the County Clerk and Recorder of Deeds offices and administers liquor licenses.
