Decatur Police Department
Now Accepting Applications

Lt. Thomas gives viewers his perspective on
being a part of the Decatur Police Department.

The Decatur Police Department is accepting applications through Wednesday, March 31 for persons interested in taking the examination to become a police patrol officer. The application is the first step in establishing an eligibility register from which candidates will be chosen as hiring becomes necessary. Police patrol officer positions are classified as civil service positions meaning that such a register must be established in advance before police hiring can take place. Over the course of a year the police department regularly has vacancies occur for various reasons – including retirements and relocations – which is why it is important to begin the application process early.

Applications and a full job description are available HERE or at the following address:

City of Decatur
Human Resources Division
#1 Gary K. Anderson Plaza
Decatur, IL 62523

The process is expected to take about 16 weeks and will consist of a physical fitness
test, written examination and background investigation.

Applicants who pass the physical fitness and written tests will undergo an oral interview and participate in a ride-a-long with a current officer. Eligible veterans may receive 5 veterans preference points added to their final examination score.

The following qualifications will be required of applicants:

• At the time of the physical fitness test, applicant must be between 20 and 35 years of age and no applicant less than 21 years of age shall be appointed to the uniformed police. In cases where an applicant has had special training or experience in police related work, the Civil Service Commission may, at its discretion, accept applicants 36 years of age or older with one year of increased age allowed for each year of training or experience (to a maximum of 4 years).

• Applicant must have no felony convictions or any disqualifying misdemeanor convictions identified by the Illinois Law
  Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

• Applicant may not be prohibited by any court action and/or state or federal statute from carrying a firearm.

• Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

At time of appointment, a Police Patrol Officer must be a US Citizen and must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license. Prior to appointment, eligible applicants must be accepted for membership in the Decatur Police Pension Fund. Generally, applicants must also be in good health, be of good moral character and not possess an adverse police record.

Contact Lieutenant Jon Thomas or Sgt. Brad Sweeney at 424-2743 for more information about the police department. For more info about the application process contact the city’s Human Resources division at 424-2805.
