The Crime Analysis Unit
was derived in 1990 and is staffed by Senior Crime Analyst Kimberly
Chervinko and Crime Analyst Ginger Edwards. The unit is supported by one
full time clerical worker. In addition, the unit participates in the
Department's Career Development Program whereby sworn officers rotate into
the Crime Analysis Unit for a six month period. This officer is trained in
nearly all facets of the operation. The unit's main function is to act as an information conduit. The group of participants in the communication network grows on a daily basis. We collect, collate, analyze and distribute information on crime patterns, trends, and possible suspects. It is our goal to share intelligence data with both internal and external users; all to aid in the investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of those breaking the law. Furthermore, the Crime Analysis Unit is responsible for the monthly preparation and distribution of profile packets for those juveniles in Decatur deemed to be Serious Habitual Offenders (SHOCAP). This program was initiated in 1990 and its main intent is to more proactively intervene in the lives of juveniles with the propensity to commit the majority of serious crimes. The unit is also responsible for insuring the proper registration of sex offenders in compliance with the Sex Offender Registration Act and Sex Offender Community Notification Law. The unit maintains the database and archive information related to these registrants and coordinates with the Illinois State Police in tracking down those that have failed to meet their registration requirements. Address information associated with the registrants is available to the public and may be viewed--in person--during regular business hours, Monday through Friday at the Macon County Sheriff's Office. Identification of the inquirer will be requested. Phone inquiries are not accepted. The same information is also available on the Illinois State Police web site. Those in the Crime Analysis Unit work together to retrieve particles of information from a variety of sources in an attempt to develop leads that aid the diverse units of the Decatur Police Department in their daily functions. Any questions should be directed to the Crime Analysis Unit (217) 424-2723. |
