Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Events Set

The 28th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. banquet and associated events have been scheduled.

The theme for this year’s events is “Let’s put an end to…” with the banquet scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, January 18 2014 at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. Dorothy Butler Gilliam, the first African-American female reporter to be hired by the Washington Post, will serve as the banquet speaker. She is also the founder of Prime Movers Media, a journalism mentorship program for underserved students at urban schools.

Individual banquet tickets are $30 and must be purchased in advance at the City of Decatur’s Office of Human Resources located on the second floor of the Decatur Civic Center. Tickets will not be sold at the door on the day of the banquet.

Butler Gilliam worked as a journalist for the Washington Post from October 1961 through the mid 60’s and returned in 1972 to continue what became an award winning. landmark career prior to her retirement in 2003. She worked at the Post as a columnist and editor and also worked for both Ebony Magazine and Jet Magazine.

Butler Gilliam is also a past president of the National Association of Black Journalists.

The community’s annual Freedom march in honor of Dr. King will begin at noon Monday, January 20 at both Mueller Park and Hess Park/Harris School along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive before converging at St. Patrick’s Church located at 407 E. Eldorado St.
