Roadway Projects Continue City’s
Capital Investment Focus
DECATUR - Decatur residents could begin seeing improvements to not less than 18 city streets as soon as this summer following recent Decatur City Council approval of a resolution supporting the funding of $2.2 million in street restoration projects.
The projects are part of the city’s 2009 street restoration program and will be paid for through Motor Fuel Tax Funds which are collected by the State of Illinois and allocated to local agencies for transportation projects. The City’s engineering department expects to begin advertising for bids for in May and should bring the projects to the City Council for project awards in June.
Some of the restoration projects could be delayed if the ongoing televising of sewers underneath the streets unearths unexpected problems.
Monday’s Council action continues the City’s focus on capital improvements as part of this year’s budget, a budget that includes $26 million in engineering and infrastructure investments dedicated to rebuilding and repairing our roadways and sewers and protecting our water supply when paired with expected stimulus funding. The city has about 740 lane miles of streets — almost the equivalent of a road trip from Decatur to Washington, D.C. — and about 360 miles of sewer to maintain.
“The street restoration work and other planned projects represent a significant capital investment in our community,” said City Manager Ryan McCrady. “Beyond the direct investment, the projects will also help to get a lot of people working this summer and hopefully beyond.”
A complete listing of the streets where work will take place is attached. For more information contact Billy Tyus at 424-2753.
