Decatur City Council Seeks Public Opinion on Unexpired Council Seat

DECATUR - The Decatur City Council is asking for the public’s help over the next two weeks in nominating a Decatur resident to fill the Council seat being vacated by mayor-elect Mike McElroy.

Residents interested in providing suggestions should write a paragraph or two suggesting the person they would like to see fill the seat and explaining why that person would be the best representative for the residents of Decatur. The person selected by the Decatur City Council will be asked to fill the remainder of a two-year term.

The person selected must have been a resident of the City for one year prior to the most recent election and of voting age, must not be in arrears or in debt to local government and cannot have ever been convicted in a court of law of malfeasance of office, bribery or other corrupt crime.

Those interested in providing suggestions can do so in one of two ways:

  • Online at www.decaturil.gov. The survey should appear as you open the web page.
  • Mail suggestions in care of Billy Tyus to:
    City Manager’s Office
Decatur Civic Center – Third Floor
    1 Gary K. Anderson Plaza
    Decatur, IL 62523

Among other things, council members are responsible for:

  • Serving as the legislative body for the City and the members adopt the laws and policies for local government.
  • Appointing a city manager to act as administrative head of the various city departments and the employees.
  • Defining the powers and duties of appointed officers and employees.
  • Adopting a budget to guide expenditures and revenue.
  • Appropriating funds to operate City government.
  • Voting on the Mayoral appointment of members to various advisory committees and commissions.

The Decatur City Council seated on May 4 will ultimately decide what person fills the unexpired seat. For more information contact Billy Tyus at 424-2753.
