COUNCIL VOTES TO KEEP HOTEL TAX, SUPPORTS NEW RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT WHILE DEMOLISHING PROBLEM DWELLINGS
DECATUR - The Decatur City Council on Tuesday voted in favor of keeping the hotel use tax at its current level.
The Council voted 6-0 during its regular meeting to keep the City’s Hotel Use tax at six percent where it has stood since 2002 when an additional 2 percent was added. The additional 2 percent generates about $200,000 annually for the most part through spending from people who come into the city — not local residents.
The council also voted unanimously during the meeting to help facilitate a new 19.32 acre residential development and to demolish six structures deemed by the courts to be problematic in our community.
The Council voted 6-0 to rezone the Mueller Heights development from R-3 single family residence district to PD Planned Development district, with the site now subdivided into 19 lots with 16 of the lots to be sold for residential development and three to be used as common areas. The petitioner is proposing the construction of four single family units and twelve two-family residential units for a total of 28 new residential units.
