FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prairie Avenue To Close Monday Morning

DECATUR - Prairie Avenue at the railroad bridge just east of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30 for bridge repairs, weather permitting.

The closure is expected to extend until approximately Friday, December 25. Detour routes are as follows.

  • Eastbound traffic - Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to either William Street or Wood Street to Jasper Street to Prairie Avenue
  • Westbound traffic - Jasper Street to either William Street or Wood Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

The bridge work will involve wrapping fiber glass sheets around the columns and placing strips around the deck structure prior to repainting. Since the work is temperature sensitive, workers will need to encase the entire bridge and heat the interior to perform the work.

The cost of the project is estimated to be $350,000, which will be paid by the Canadian National Railroad. For more information contact Billy Tyus at 424-2753.
