FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DECATUR POLICE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
DECATUR - The Decatur Police Department is now accepting applications for its next round of testing and hiring.
Applications will be accepted today through Friday, April 10 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the city’s human resources department on the second floor of the Decatur Civic Center. Last month the department added two additional officers bringing the total number of officers to 168, a number which includes a full staffing level of 164 officers plus four over hires added in anticipation of vacancies that often occur for a variety of reasons. Over hires allow the department to remain at full strength when officers leave; police officials estimate that there could be 6-8 retirements this year.
New patrolman officer salaries start at $45,832 and can quickly grow to more than $67,434 annually. Department officers can also earn:
- 2-6 weeks vacation
- 13 paid holidays per year
- Overtime pay/comp time
- Pension and Health insurance for officers and family members
** There are also a variety of other assignments in the department, including:
- Field Training Officer
- Use of Force Instructor
- Firearms Instructor
- Defensive Tactics Instructor
- A.C.T. (Anti-Crime Team)
- Gang Specialist
- Master Patrol Officer
- K-9 Officer
- E.R.T. (Emergency Response Team)
- F.A.I.T. (Fatal Accident Investigation Team)
- Detective
Perhaps most importantly, officers have a chance to make a difference in the community — the kind of positive difference that happens on this job each and every day. For media inquiries call Lieutenant Jon Thomas at 424-2740. Those interested in applying and who need more information should call 424-2805.
